How to Update Dolby DSP Microcode for the UL-718AVP & UL-749AVP
print icon

Overview

The Ultra Series Downmixing Encoders UL-718AVP and UL-749AVP include a dedicated Dolby DSP processor for audio downmixing. This processor runs its own microcode, which must be updated separately from the main J+P firmware.

Keeping this microcode up to date improves debugging visibility and helps prevent intermittent audio dropouts.

The update is performed using a SyncMOS USB writer connected to the Encoder’s 4-pin Molex port.

Download

The download contains:

  1. SyncMOS SMAP Tool – Used to flash DSP microcode
  2. MCU_FW_V3.05.hex – Dolby DSP microcode file
  3. B2.0.6_TX.bin – Optional firmware required to activate the updated microcode

Required Hardware

  • Windows PC (Windows 7 or newer; macOS not supported)
  • SyncMOS MSM9066 USB writer with 5-pin to 4-pin Molex cable
  • UL-718AVP or UL-749AVP Ultra Series Downmixing Encoder

Update Instructions

PART 1: Flash Dolby DSP Microcode

⚠️ Warning: Perform these steps in order. Skipping steps or changing default settings can damage the device.

  1. Connect the SyncMOS USB writer to the Molex cable as shown below.

  2. Connect the USB writer to the PC and the Molex connector to the Encoder’s 4-pin port.
    • The UL-749AVP contains three Encoders. This process must be completed on all three.

  3. Launch SMAP, select Writer MSM 9066, and update the writer firmware if prompted.
    • Do not modify any default values.

  4. Select SM59R16A5L, 3V in the MCU section.
  5. In the Code section:
    • Set Initial Value to FF
    • Enable Code
    • Load MCU_FW_V3.05.hex

  6. In Configuration, set ISP Start Addr (N) to No ISP Code.
  7. Set the following options:
    • On-line ICP: Enabled
    • Speed: Custom2
    • Chip Erase: Enabled
    • Blank Check: Disabled
    • Program: Enabled
    • Verify: Disabled
    • Protect: Enabled
    • MCU Reset: Enabled
  8. Power on the Encoder and wait for a solid Power LED.
  9. Click Autorun.
  10. Confirm the message Reset MCU finished!.
  11. Power-cycle the Encoder to complete Part 1.

PART 2: Update Firmware to Activate Microcode

⚠️ Important: Perform this section only after completing Part 1.

  1. If the system is below firmware B2.0.5, update all devices first. If already on B2.0.5, update only the Encoder to B2.0.6.
  2. Access the Encoder webUI.
  3. Select Update.
  4. Upload B2.0.6_TX.bin and allow the device to reboot.
  5. Confirm firmware version reads B2.0.6.
  6. To verify microcode:
    • Open the CLI from the webUI menu
    • Send VERSION_READ
    • Confirm response: V3.05 2020-06-08
