Overview

Ultra series AVP encoders are unique within the Just Add Power system because they are the only models capable of downmixing audio. These encoders support stereo audio or Dolby® Digital 5.1 but do not accommodate higher-level audio formats. The specific models classified as AVP encoders include:

  • UL-718AVP
  • UL-718WP4
  • UL-749AVP
  • UL-718KVM + DSPKIT
  • UL-749KVM + DSPKIT

Audio Processing

When an AVP encoder receives a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio signal from a source device, the audio signal is downmixed to LPCM 2.0 audio by using the Dolby Pro Logic II® codec.

Downmixing on a Just Add Power AVP encoder results in:

  1. Stereo-capable displays recieve LPCM 2.0 audio from the decoder attached.

  2. Dolby Digital compatible AVRs will detect and display LPCM 2.0 from the decoder attached.

    • Important! Set the AVR to Dolby Surround in order for it to utilize Dolby Pro Logic II to properly upmix the signal from LPCM 2.0 and provide 5.1 discrete channels:

      • Front Left
      • Front Right
      • Front Center
      • Back Left
      • Back Right
      • Low Frequency

Planning Considerations

An AVP encoder is ideal in these circumstances:

  • A source outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 - cable, satellite, streaming device - that needs to be distributed to stereo and surround zones simultaneously
  • A source outputting stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 that needs to be fed into an analog audio distribution system

For information on the different ways that Just Add Power encoders handle audio for planning purposes, please see the encoder Audio Planning article.
