print icon

Overview

The 718KVM Encoder — and its 3-in-1 rackmount version, the 749KVM — includes the following features when purchased:

  • 4K video with HDCP 2.2 support
  • Stereo audio support
  • 3.5mm stereo analog audio output with adjustable delay
  • KVM support for USB 2.0
  • RS232, CEC, and IR control

The DSP-KIT is an optional, field-installable upgrade that adds advanced audio features:

  • Dolby Digital 5.1 audio support
  • Dolby DSP re-encoding (Dolby Digital 5.1 → stereo via Dolby Pro Logic II) for HDMI distribution to both multi-channel and stereo zones. See this article for details.
  • 3.5mm stereo analog output with adjustable delay and volume
  • Two analog audio inputs mixable with HDMI audio

718KVM vs. 718AVP

The easiest way to describe the 718KVM and 749KVM models is:

718KVM + DSP-KIT = 718AVP

749KVM + (3 × DSP-KIT) = 749AVP

Installing a DSP-KIT upgrades a 718KVM (or 749KVM) to full AVP-level functionality, adding Dolby Digital audio processing and advanced mixing capabilities.

Installing the DSP-KIT

Only a Phillips-head screwdriver is required for this installation. Follow the steps below:

  1. Remove the four screws from the sides of the 718KVM case.

    Remove side screws

  2. Remove the locking nuts from the 3.5mm Mic-In and Line-In ports on the front of the unit.

    remove locking nuts

  3. Locate the empty socket area on the circuit board where the DSP-KIT connects.

    locate socket area

  4. Align the DSP-KIT board with the pins and press down evenly from all four corners. Ensure all three sets of pins are aligned before applying pressure.

    Insert DSP-KIT board

  5. Reassemble the case, reinstall the screws, and replace the locking nuts.

Confirming DSP-KIT Installation

The 718KVM front panel includes a green Dolby Digital LED indicator. Its behavior changes depending on whether the DSP-KIT is installed:

  • Without DSP-KIT: The LED blinks slowly and steadily, regardless of the audio format.
  • With DSP-KIT installed:
    • LED is solid on when receiving Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.
    • LED is off when receiving stereo audio or no audio signal.
