Overview
On MaxColor systems, KVM refers to two separate USB-related functions:
- KVM Pass-through: Connecting a USB device to a MaxColor Decoder allows it to communicate with a USB device connected to a MaxColor Encoder. For example, a keyboard and mouse connected at a Decoder can control a PC connected to an Encoder.
- USB Hotkey: Connecting a USB keyboard or mouse to a MaxColor Decoder enables programmable hotkeys that control Just Add Power system functions (such as switching the Decoder to a specific Encoder). See the USB Hotkey article for configuration details.
For a general explanation of KVM concepts and use cases, see: KVM Support Overview .
Supported Firmware
- KVM Pass-through: Supported beginning with firmware MAX v3.7.3
- USB Hotkey: Supported beginning with firmware MAX v4.3.0
KVM Commands
Command: Connect
To establish a KVM Pass-through connection, send the following command to the MaxColor Decoder over Telnet. The Decoder will link USB control to the Encoder it is currently viewing.
usb connect
To control a different Encoder, first switch the Decoder to view that Encoder, then resend the command.
Command: Disconnect
To break an active KVM Pass-through connection, send the following command to the Decoder:
usb stop
USB Hotkey
USB Hotkeys are configured through the Decoder web interface. Refer to the USB Hotkey article for complete setup instructions.
Supported KVM Devices
MaxColor systems support up to seven (7) USB devices simultaneously controlling a single Encoder. If more than seven USB devices attempt to connect, the system will drop devices in the order they were originally connected, keeping only the seven most recently connected devices active.
MaxColor supports both Bulk and Isochronous USB device types, including:
- USB 2.0 devices
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Touchscreen
- Gaming controller or joystick
- USB flash drive
- PTZ camera control devices
- Webcam video devices
- Microphones
Troubleshooting
KVM on MaxColor systems is generally plug-and-play. If USB control is not working, verify the following:
- Confirm that USB cables are securely connected at both the Encoder and Decoder. Unplug and reconnect to ensure proper seating.
- Connect the USB device directly to the source (such as a PC) to verify that the device is functional and compatible.
- Remove any USB hubs, extenders, or intermediate devices between the USB device and the Encoder or Decoder.
