UL-759A Tiling Encoder Microcode Update

Contact Technical Support Before Updating

This procedure requires specialized programming tools and updates two separate microprocessors. Contact the Just Add Power Technical Support team to confirm the required hardware and microcode files before beginning.

Overview

The UL-759A Tiling Encoder, formerly identified as the 3G+4+ Tiling Transmitter, contains two microprocessors that operate independently of its web-based firmware. These microprocessors require specialized Just Add Power programming tools and cannot be updated through the webUI.

A microcode update may be required to correct an issue, add functionality, or maintain compatibility with the firmware installed on the Encoder.

Both Microprocessors Must Be Updated

The SyncMOS and USB Direct procedures are both required. Updating only one microprocessor can cause the Tiling Encoder to behave unpredictably or stop functioning correctly.

Identify the Installed Microcode

The UL-759A has three known microcode releases. Identify the installed release before selecting an update.

To distinguish between the 2016 and 2023 releases, execute the following command through the Command Line Interface (CLI) of the Tiling Encoder:

Confirm Firmware Compatibility

The installed firmware determines which microcode release the Tiling Encoder requires. Do not update the device firmware or microcode until the correct combination has been confirmed with Just Add Power Technical Support.

Requirements

Required Hardware

  • A PC running a native installation of Windows
    • macOS and virtual machines are not supported.
  • USB Direct cable: USB to 4-pin Molex
  • SyncMOS MSM9066 USB programmer
  • SyncMOS programming cable: 5-pin to 4-pin Molex
  • The power supply for the UL-759A Tiling Encoder

Required Software and Microcode Files

  • SyncMOS SMAP1293
  • USB Direct
  • The matching .hex and .srec microcode files

The download contains both programming applications and the files loaded by those applications. Install USB Direct and SyncMOS SMAP1293 on the Windows PC before connecting the programming hardware.

If the SMAP1293 installer prompts you to install the PL-2303 driver, complete the driver installation.

Use Files from the Same Release

The .hex file used with SyncMOS and the .srec file used with USB Direct must belong to the same microcode release.

Program the Tiling Encoder

Complete both phases in order:

  1. Program the SyncMOS microprocessor.
  2. Program the USB Direct microprocessor.

Phase 1: SyncMOS SMAP1293

  1. Install SMAP_1293_Setup.exe.
    • If prompted, install the PL-2303 driver.
  2. Connect the SyncMOS programming cable to the SyncMOS USB programmer as shown below.

  3. Connect the SyncMOS USB programmer to the Windows PC.
  4. Connect the 4-pin Molex end of the SyncMOS cable to the connector marked in green below.

  5. Power on the Tiling Encoder.
  6. Open SyncMOS SMAP.
  7. Select 9066 as the Writer.
    • If prompted to update the SyncMOS programmer firmware, accept the default values selected by the application.
  8. At the top of the application, select the Chip and Green Check icon.
  9. Select the following MCU:

    SM59R16A5L, 3V

  10. Select the Folder icon and configure the program file:
    • Set Initial Value to FF.
    • Select the checkbox beside Code.
    • Select Open on the Code row.
    • Select the appropriate .hex file from the SyncMOS SMAP1293 folder.
    • Select OK.

  11. Select On-line ICP from the menu on the left.
  12. Select the Configuration tab on the right.
  13. Set ISP Start Addr (N) to No ISP Code.
    • Leave the remaining Configuration settings unchanged.
  14. Configure the programming options in the bottom-center section:
    • Set the speed dropdown to Custom speed.
    • Set the custom speed to 2.
    • Select Chip Erase.
    • Select Blank Check.
    • Select Program.
    • Select Verify.
    • Clear Protect.
    • Select MCU Reset.

  15. Select Autorun and allow the programming process to finish.
  16. Disconnect the SyncMOS USB programmer from the Tiling Encoder.
  17. Power-cycle the Tiling Encoder.

Disconnect the SyncMOS Programmer

The SyncMOS programmer must be disconnected before beginning the USB Direct procedure. Leaving it connected will interfere with USB Direct programming and cause the operation to fail.

Phase 2: USB Direct

  1. Confirm that the SyncMOS programmer is disconnected from the Tiling Encoder.
  2. Install USB Direct Setup.exe.
  3. Power off the Tiling Encoder.
  4. Connect the USB Direct cable between the Windows PC and the 4-pin Molex connector marked in red below.

  5. Power on the Tiling Encoder and wait for Windows to detect the USB Direct cable.
  6. Open Device Manager.
  7. Expand Other devices and locate the newly detected Unknown device.
  8. Right-click the device and select Update driver.

  9. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  10. Browse to the following driver folder:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Spansion\FLASH USB DIRECT Programmer\driver\Win7\

    The folder name remains Win7 when the utility is installed on a newer compatible version of Windows.

  11. The folder name remains Win7 even when the utility is installed on a newer compatible version of Windows.

  12. Complete the driver installation.
  13. In Device Manager, locate the USB Direct device under Ports (COM & LPT) and record its assigned COM port number.
  14. Open the USBDirect application.
  15. Configure the application:
    1. Select MB9AF314L/M/N from the Target MCU List.
    2. Select Open.
    3. Select the appropriate .srec file from the USB Direct folder.
    4. Select the COM port recorded from Device Manager.
    5. Select Full Operation (D+E+B+P).

  16. When prompted to power-cycle the microprocessor:
    1. Turn off the Tiling Encoder.
    2. Wait five seconds.
    3. Turn on the Tiling Encoder.
    4. Wait five seconds.
    5. Select OK in the USB Direct prompt.
  17. Allow the Full Operation process to finish.
  18. Select Download.
  19. When prompted again:
    1. Turn off the Tiling Encoder.
    2. Wait five seconds.
    3. Turn on the Tiling Encoder.
    4. Wait five seconds.
    5. Select OK.

    This downloads the updated microcode again after the power cycle.

  20. Select Read & Compare.
  21. Confirm that the following message appears: The flash and the hex file are identical

  22. Select OK.
  23. If a different comparison result appears, repeat the USB Direct programming procedure beginning with application configuration.
  24. Disconnect the USB Direct cable.
  25. Power-cycle the Tiling Encoder one final time to complete the update.

Confirm the Update

After both programming procedures are complete, reconnect the Tiling Encoder to the system and execute the following CLI command:

VERSION_READ

Confirm that the response matches the microcode release intended for the installed firmware. If the response is unexpected or the Tiling Encoder does not operate normally, contact the Just Add Power Technical Support team.
