Convert an Established Omega/Ultra JADConfig Single-Switch System to AMP

Overview

This article explains how to migrate an established single-switch Omega Series or Ultra Series system from JADConfig to an AMP Standardized configuration.

The existing switch may be retained when it is supported by AMP and has enough ports for the completed system. If the existing switch is no longer available or supported, it may be replaced with a compatible model during the migration.

End of Support Notice: JADConfig systems will reach End of Support on January 1, 2027. Beginning on that date, a system must be migrated from JADConfig to AMP before the Just Add Power Support Team can provide further troubleshooting or system service.

Scope: This procedure applies to an existing JADConfig system with Omega Series or Ultra Series devices connected to one network switch. It does not apply to 2G Series systems, stacked or trunked multi-switch systems, or systems configured using another topology.

Requirements

Confirm all of the following before beginning:

  • The system was configured using JADConfig standards and uses only one switch for its Just Add Power devices.
  • The system contains Omega Series or Ultra Series devices running compatible Bx.x.x firmware.
  • The switch that will be used after the migration appears on the Supported Switches for AMP Standardized Systems list.
  • The completed system will not exceed the supported Just Add Power device capacity or available ports of the selected switch.
  • The service PC can access the Local or Data Network connection at the switch location.
  • The switch management IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and login credentials are available and have been verified.
  • Sufficient downtime has been scheduled. Video distribution and control will be unavailable during portions of this procedure.
  • The control system programmer is available to update the driver, switch address, device mapping, or other programming required by the AMP configuration.

Important: Do not reset or replace the switch, upload a new configuration, change IP addresses, or move device connections until the system has been fully documented. These changes can interrupt service or remove information needed to complete the migration.

Document and Plan the Migration

Complete the Takeover Form

Follow the Just Add Power System Takeover Guide and complete the Takeover Form before making changes. Submit the completed form to the Just Add Power Support Team so the current system and proposed migration can be reviewed.

Document at least the following:

  • The switch manufacturer, model, hardware version, MAC address, management IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and login credentials.
  • Every active Encoder, including its assigned number, connected source, and current switch port.
  • Every active Decoder, including its assigned number, connected display, and current switch port.
  • The total number of switch ports configured for Encoders and Decoders, including reserved ports that do not currently have a device connected.
  • The existing Local or Data Network connection.
  • The installed device firmware and operating mode.
  • The control system platform, driver, switch address, and current source-to-display mapping.

In JADConfig, run Read Switch Config and save the generated Report File. Use the Report File to confirm the configured Encoder and Decoder counts and their assigned numbering. Compare the report with the physical installation because cabling or hardware may have changed since the report was created.

Complete the Conversion Form or Calculator

Use one of the following resources to record the existing system and plan the AMP switch-port assignments:

The PDF provides a printable worksheet for recording the existing system and planning the conversion. Submit the completed PDF to the Just Add Power Support Team to receive the new device port mapping.

The Excel calculator uses the entered system information to generate the new AMP device port mapping automatically.

Label Before Repatching: Label every network run and photograph the existing switch connections before moving cables. AMP Standardized uses a different switch-port order than JADConfig. Missing or incorrect labels can make the new device mapping and control system programming difficult to complete.

Label the Network Cables

Label each network cable according to its current function and assigned JADConfig number:

  • Label the cable connected to JADConfig port 1 as Network Uplink.
  • Label the cable for Encoder 1 as Encoder 1, and continue for every Encoder.
  • Label the cable for Decoder 1 as Decoder 1, and continue for every Decoder.
  • Record any empty switch ports reserved for future Encoders or Decoders.

HDMI and other endpoint cables may remain connected to the Just Add Power devices. Only their network connections need to be moved during this procedure.

Migration Procedure

Part 1: Prepare the Switch

  1. Confirm that the current system inventory, JADConfig Report File, Conversion Form or Calculator, cable labels, and connection photographs are complete.

  2. Disconnect all labeled network cables from the existing switch.

    Retaining the Existing Switch: Leave the switch installed and continue to step 4.

  3. If the switch is being replaced, remove the existing switch, install the replacement, and leave all network cables disconnected.

  4. Connect the cable labeled Network Uplink to the last copper network port on the switch. Do not count SFP or SFP+ ports unless AMP or the switch-specific instructions identify one as the Data Network port.

  5. Connect the service PC to the Local or Data Network and confirm that it can communicate with the switch.

Part 2: Build the AMP Project

  1. Open AMP and start a new AMP Standardized project.

  2. Enter the switch manufacturer and exact model.

    Verify the Hardware: Confirm the switch model and hardware version against the supported-switch article. Similar model names or different hardware revisions may not use the same AMP configuration.

  3. Enter the switch management IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway recorded during planning. Confirm that the address is valid for the jobsite network and is not assigned to another device.

  4. Enter the total number of configured ports for Encoders and Decoders. Include both active devices and empty ports reserved for future expansion.

    Example: If the JADConfig system has eight Encoder ports but only six active Encoders, enter 8 Encoders so the reserved positions remain part of the AMP layout.

  5. Follow AMP until it instructs you to upload the discovery configuration to the switch.

  6. Upload the discovery configuration using the instructions for the selected switch model. See Upload a Switch Configuration.

  7. Return to AMP and confirm that the discovery configuration has been uploaded.

Part 3: Repatch the Devices

  1. When AMP displays the switch patching diagram, connect each labeled Decoder cable to its assigned port, beginning with Decoder 1.

  2. Connect each labeled Encoder cable to its assigned port, beginning with Encoder 1. The first Encoder port depends on the number of Decoder ports included in the project.

  3. Leave any planned expansion ports empty. Do not shift active devices into those positions.

  4. Confirm every physical connection against the completed Conversion Form or Calculator and the AMP patching diagram before continuing.

Preserve Device Numbering: A device identified as Decoder 1 or Encoder 1 in the JADConfig system must remain Decoder 1 or Encoder 1 in AMP, even though it connects to a different switch port. Preserving the existing numbering reduces the control system changes required after migration.

Port-Mapping Example

The following images show the same system with 10 Encoders and 10 Decoders before and after migration. The first image shows the JADConfig port layout, and the second shows the AMP Standardized port layout.

Selected connections from this example move as follows:

The exact port numbers depend on the switch model and the Encoder and Decoder counts entered in AMP. Follow the patching diagram generated for the project.

Part 4: Complete AMP and Update Control

  1. Continue through AMP until the switch and all Just Add Power devices have been configured. AMP will assign new device IP addresses during this process.

  2. Save the AMP project and Report File when prompted.

    Save the Report File: The Report File records the completed AMP configuration and is essential for updating the control system and servicing the system later.

  3. Review and update the control system driver and programming for the AMP configuration. Current integration resources are available from Just Add Power Control.

Verify the Migration

Before returning the system to service:

  • Confirm that AMP can communicate with the configured switch.
  • Confirm that the switch responds at its assigned management IP address.
  • Confirm that AMP discovers the expected number of Encoders and Decoders.
  • Confirm that each device retains its intended Encoder or Decoder number.
  • Test switching from every source to at least one display and verify representative displays throughout the system.
  • Test the control system and any required endpoint-control functions.
  • Save the completed AMP project, AMP Report File, final switch-port map, IP information, and updated control system documentation.

Keep the Migration Record: Store the completed Takeover Form, Conversion Form or Calculator, AMP project, Report File, photographs, and control system notes together. These records establish the new supported system configuration and will simplify future service.
