Overview

Some models of Netgear M4250 and M4350 switches supported by Just Add Power are having an issue where they do not register the MAC address of connected devices automatically - leaving the ARP table blank. This results in devices not being accessible over the network - webUI, telnet, and ping all fail.

We are working closely with Netgear to identify the underlying cause, but until we can identify a permanent fix, this article includes instructions on how to hardcode MAC address entries into the switch.

Identifying the Issue

To identify if your system is experiencing this issue, perform these steps:

  1. Start with an AMP system with a properly configured static route
  2. Open a command prompt on the PC and ping these addresses one by one:
    • Ping the switch IP. The ping MUST SUCCEED.
    • Ping the IP address of VLAN 100 at 172.27.0.1. The ping MUST SUCCEED.
    • Ping active Just Add Power devices. Some pings will FAIL (some might succeed, but that is not of consequence). Identify the IP address of a device that fails. That IP address will be used in the next step.
  3. Login to the switch webUI and go to the MainUI --> Maintenance --> Troubleshooting --> Ping IPv4. Enter the IP Address/Host Name as the IP address of the Just Add Power device and click Apply in the top-right corner. The ping MUST SUCCEED.
  4. From the PC command prompt, ping the Just Add Power device IP again. This time, the ping MUST SUCCEED. (It previously failed).
  5. This change in behavior from failure to success indicates that the switch did not properly register the device in the MAC address table. The issue is present.
  6. If pings continue to fail, there is still an issue but it is not the issue described in this article.
  7. Please contact technical support if you require further troubleshooting assistance or need help interpreting the results of these tests.

Procedure

Follow the instructions below to add entries to the ARP table of the switch, one for each device:

  1. Collect the IP address and MAC address of every Just Add Power device that needs an entry (aka cannot be reached via ping). This data can be gathered via the Report File from system setup or a Read System run.
  2. Login to the switch webUI and go to the MainUI --> Routing --> ARP --> Advanced --> ARP Create.
  3. Type the IP Address and MAC Address of each device, then click Add.
  4. After all devices have been added, click Apply.
