Overview
If the Right Switch for a Standardized System (also known as a VLAN Switching System) requires more than one switch, AMP supports up to 63 switches in a single system.
Those switches need additional considerations:
- All switches in the system must be from the SAME MANUFACTURER, but may be different models.
- Switches must have 10Gb SFP+ ports.
- Copper or fiber SFP+ cables connect the switches together.
- The switches pass data between them over trunk connections and link aggregation groups.
- Switch 1 must have 1 port reserved - the last RJ45 port - for network connection. All other ports on all other switches can be filled with Just Add Power devices.

Supported Switches: Netgear
All Netgear GSM models have rear-facing ports. Switches marked with a "U" have much more POE than is needed for a Just Add Power system, but can be used if the "P" version is unavailable.

Supported Switches: Cisco
All Cisco CBS350 models have front-facing ports.
Disclaimer: Switching commands on Cisco CBS350 and C1300 switches takes longer than expected (1-2 seconds) due to the way that Cisco handles sockets for communication.

Stack vs Trunk
Standardized Configuration supports multi-switch systems in trunk topology.
Please see Stacking vs Trunking for more information.
Bandwidth Considerations
When multiple switches are used, the video bandwidth usage for Transmitters needs to be considered as the cables that connect switches have a maximum bandwidth capability that is much lower than a single switch.
To estimate Just Add Power Transmitter bandwidth usage:
Generation | Average Bandwidth* | Recommended TX per Gb |
---|---|---|
Omega | 400 Mbps | 2.5 |
Ultra | 500 Mbps | 2 |
MaxColor | 850 Mbps | 1 |
*Actual bandwidth will depend on source resolution, framerate, colorspace and content. The peak bandwidth output of a 3G Transmitter is 850 Mbps, most often during boot-up and source switching. The peak bandwidth output of a MaxColor Transmitter is 850 Mbps.
The number of SFP+ ports on each switch, combined with the number of switches in the system determine how many SFP+ links can be made between switches. Standardized Configuration builds a system so that half of the SFP+ ports connect to one switch, and the other half connect to another switch. This lets switches link together in a chain topology.
SFP+ Cables
Connecting multiple switches together requires a specialized cable, and cannot be carried over typical CatX wiring.
Most SFP+ cables are compatible, regardless of the manufacturer.
You can find SFP+ modules on Luxul's website, Cisco's website, Netgear's website, or you can use 3rd-party modules.
