Add Devices On-site with AMP Standardized Configuration

Overview

Use AMP to add new Encoders and Decoders to an established Standardized Configuration system while on-site. AMP retrieves the current system information through an active device, identifies available expansion ports, and configures each new device for the port you select.

This procedure covers Omega Series, Ultra Series, and MaxColor Series systems, along with supported 2G Series systems operating in AMP 2G Legacy Mode. For an Alternate Configuration system, follow Add New Devices On-site to an Established System with AMP Alternate Configuration.

Expansion ports must already be configured: Add Devices configures new devices for unused Encoder or Decoder ports included in the existing switch configuration. An empty Data Network port is not an available Encoder or Decoder port.

Video Walkthrough

The video demonstrates the complete on-site workflow, from identifying available ports to configuring the new devices and resolving incompatible firmware.

Before You Begin

  • Download and install AMP.
  • Confirm that the new device models support the established system's series and operating mode.
  • Obtain the IP address of an active Encoder or Decoder in the system.
  • Connect the PC to the site network using a wired Ethernet connection.
  • Identify Data Network connections where the new devices can receive power and communicate with the PC during discovery.
  • Keep the existing system documentation available to check device assignments and final switchport connections.

The new devices use two different connections during this procedure:

Stage Device connection Purpose
Discovery and configuration A Data Network port on the same local network as the PC Allows AMP to discover and configure the new device.
Final installation The Encoder or Decoder port paired with the device in AMP Places the configured device in its assigned position in the system.

For an explanation of Encoder, Decoder, and Data Network port assignments, see Switch Configuration Guidelines for AMP Standardized Systems.

Start the On-Site Workflow

  1. Open AMP and select Build & Expand for Standardized Configuration.

AMP main screen showing Build & Expand for Standardized Configuration
  2. Select Add Devices.

  3. Select On-Site.

AMP Add Devices screen showing On-Site
  4. Enter the IP address of an active Encoder or Decoder in the established system.
  5. Select the PC's wired network adapter.
  6. Click Go.
  7. Wait while AMP retrieves the current system information and identifies available expansion ports.

Enter an existing Just Add Power device's IP address at this step, rather than the switch IP address or the address of a new, unconfigured device.

Identify Available Ports

Review the switch diagram in AMP. Available expansion ports appear in light blue and dark blue. Confirm the device type associated with each available port before pairing.

  • A new Decoder requires an available Decoder port.
  • A new Encoder requires an available Encoder port.
  • For a multi-switch system, record both the switch and physical port selected for each device.

No Available Expansion Ports

If no expansion ports of the required type are available, the switch configuration must be rebuilt with additional Encoder or Decoder ports using Build New. Add Devices cannot turn an ordinary Data Network port into an expansion port.

Plan before rebuilding: Build New overwrites the existing switch configuration. Save the current system documentation and switch configuration, and plan the required service interruption before proceeding. Do not manually change the standardized Encoder, Decoder, or VLAN settings to create an expansion port.

Connect and Discover the New Devices

  1. Connect the new devices to Data Network ports on the same local network as the PC. These ports can be on the Just Add Power switch or another switch connected to that network.
  2. Provide each device with suitable PoE or its supported power supply.
  3. Allow the devices to complete startup.
  4. Wait for AMP to identify the new devices.

A device ready for configuration has a solid Power LED and a blinking Data LED. The Data LED turns off when AMP identifies the device during this workflow.

Keep the new devices on Data Network ports: Do not connect them to their final Encoder or Decoder ports until AMP has applied their IP settings and confirmed configuration.

For startup or network-link problems before discovery, see Understand Power and Data LED Behavior.

Pair the New Devices to Available Ports

Pairing assigns a new device to its final switchport. It does not select which Encoder a Decoder will watch. Keep the device connected to a Data Network port while making this assignment.

  1. Select an available port matching the new device's type—an Encoder port for an Encoder or a Decoder port for a Decoder—then click Pair.
  2. Confirm that the paired port turns green.
  3. Repeat until every new device is paired with the intended port.
  4. Record or label each device's assigned switch and port so it can be moved to the correct connection after configuration.

A green port indicates that the pairing has been made in AMP. The device still needs its IP settings applied and must then be moved to that physical port.

Correct a Pairing

If you pair a device with the wrong port:

  1. Click the green paired port in the switch diagram.
  2. Click Yes to unpair it.
  3. Select the correct available port and click Pair again.

Review all pairings before applying the configuration.

Apply IP Settings

  1. Confirm that every new device is paired with the correct Encoder or Decoder port.
  2. Click Apply IPs.
  3. Wait for the pop-up confirming that the devices are configured.

Do not interrupt configuration: Keep AMP open and maintain power and network connections until the confirmation appears. Move the devices only after AMP confirms that configuration is complete.

Move the Devices to Their Final Ports

  1. Disconnect each newly configured device from its temporary Data Network port.
  2. Connect it to the exact switch and Encoder or Decoder port paired with it in AMP.
  3. Allow any device powered by PoE to restart after being moved.
  4. Confirm that all new devices are reconnected, then click Finish in AMP.

Use the recorded pairings to check the connections. A device connected to a different Encoder or Decoder port does not match the assignment you just configured.

Resolve Incompatible Firmware

If a new device's firmware is incompatible with the established system firmware, AMP displays the Incompatible Devices page after you reconnect the devices and click Finish.

  1. Review the devices listed as incompatible.
  2. Click Update Now.
  3. Allow AMP to complete the firmware update and any required device restart.
  4. Follow AMP's remaining prompts until the compatibility check and cleanup are complete.

Do not interrupt a firmware update: Do not disconnect device power or network cables, close AMP, or disconnect the PC while the update is in progress.

If the devices are already compatible, AMP proceeds to cleanup without requiring this update. Allow AMP to finish cleaning up the changes it made to the PC before closing the application.

Verify and Document the Expanded System

After AMP completes the workflow:

  1. Connect the required sources, displays, and any additional audio, USB, or control connections.
  2. Test each new Encoder by selecting it on a compatible, known-working Decoder.
  3. Test each new Decoder by selecting a compatible, known-working Encoder.
  4. Verify video, audio, and any additional features required for the installation.
  5. Update the control system programming to include the new inputs, outputs, and device IP addresses where required. Test switching from the customer's control interface.
  6. Use Gather Details in AMP to save an updated report containing the system's IP addresses, device count, and port connections.

Keep the updated report with the site documentation so future service work uses the current assignments.

Troubleshooting

AMP Cannot Retrieve the Established System

  • Confirm that the entered IP address belongs to an active Encoder or Decoder in this system.
  • Verify that the device is powered and connected to its assigned switchport.
  • Confirm that the PC is wired to the correct site network and that the corresponding wired adapter is selected in AMP.
  • Try another active device in the established system.

If the PC cannot access the Device Network, review Static Route Options for Accessing the Just Add Power Device Network. A control processor's gateway configuration does not provide access for the PC.

A New Device Is Not Discovered

  • Confirm that the new device is connected to a Data Network port on the same local network as the PC.
  • Check that it was not connected to an Encoder or Decoder port before configuration.
  • Verify power, startup, and the physical Ethernet connection.
  • If the installed cable path is suspect, test with a short, known-working patch cable directly between the device and a suitable Data Network port.

A Device Does Not Work After Moving to Its Final Port

  1. Compare the physical switch and port connection with the pairing recorded in AMP.
  2. Confirm that AMP displayed the configuration confirmation before the device was moved.
  3. Confirm that any required firmware update completed.
  4. Test the new device with a compatible, known-working source or display path.
  5. If switching works in testing but not from the customer's control interface, check the new input, output, and IP assignments in the control system programming.
